Morocco Commits Ksh.542.6 Billion to Airport Overhaul Ahead of 2030 World Cup

In preparation for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which it will co-host alongside Portugal and Spain, Morocco has announced a bold five-year investment plan to modernize and expand its airport infrastructure. The government revealed it will spend Ksh.542.6 billion ($4.2 billion) through a strategic partnership with the national airports authority, ONDA.

The comprehensive plan includes an allocation of Ksh.879 billion toward airport expansion projects and an additional Ksh.457 billion dedicated to maintenance and land acquisition. A central goal of the initiative is to increase national airport capacity from the current 38 million passengers to 80 million by 2030.

Part of the expansion involves Casablanca’s largest airport, where Morocco issued expressions of interest in May to seek bidders for a new terminal capable of accommodating 20 million additional passengers.

This ambitious infrastructure investment aligns with Morocco’s rapidly growing tourism sector. The country welcomed a record-breaking 17.4 million visitors last year—a 20% increase from 2023—and aims to attract 26 million tourists by the time the World Cup kicks off.

Morocco’s forward-looking airport development strategy not only positions it as a key player in global aviation and tourism but also underscores its commitment to delivering a world-class experience for international travelers and football fans in 2030.
