MP George Koimburi Appears in Court Over Alleged Staged Abduction

Juja Member of Parliament George Koimburi presented himself at the Milimani Law Courts on Wednesday, facing charges related to an alleged staged abduction. His appearance comes more than a week after a warrant for his arrest was issued.

Koimburi, arraigned before Principal Magistrate Ben Mark Ekhubi, pleaded not guilty to conspiracy charges. He was granted cash bail of Ksh.300,000 and required to provide three contact persons as part of his release conditions. The matter is scheduled for mention on August 5, 2025, for pre-trial proceedings.

The prosecution alleges that on May 25, 2025, Koimburi, along with five others—Peter Kiratu Muhia, David Macharia Gatana, Cyrus Keriu Muhia, and two individuals known as Peter and Njuguna alias “Njugush”—staged a kidnapping in Mugutha, Juja sub-county. The incident was allegedly orchestrated to prevent Koimburi’s arrest and arraignment on separate land fraud charges.

According to court filings, Koimburi claimed he was abducted outside a church, later found in Ruiru, and hospitalized. Opposition politicians initially condemned the incident, citing claims of torture. However, the State now asserts the abduction was fabricated.

Koimburi also faces a separate charge for publishing false information, linked to a YouTube statement from Nairobi Hospital where he described his alleged ordeal. Co-accused Peter Kiratu Muhia has been charged with giving false information to authorities after reportedly filing a misleading report at Mugutha Police Station.

The case continues to draw public interest due to its political implications and the seriousness of the accusations.
