In a heartwarming display of faith and tradition, thousands of pilgrims and well-wishers gathered in the picturesque Italian village of Castel Gandolfo on Sunday to witness Pope Leo deliver his first Angelus prayer from the historic papal summer residence.

Braving overcast skies and light rain, crowds lined the streets of the hilltop town—just 20 kilometres southeast of Rome—as the Pope appeared outside the gates of the Apostolic Palace. Flanked by two Swiss Guards in full ceremonial attire, Pope Leo greeted the faithful warmly, declaring, “I am happy to be among you… and thank you all for your warm welcome.”

The event marks the revival of Castel Gandolfo as a summer retreat for popes, a tradition that had been paused during Pope Francis’ tenure. Pope Leo arrived at the residence on July 6 for a two-week period of rest and reflection.

Before delivering the Angelus, Pope Leo celebrated Mass at the Church of Saint Thomas of Villanova, later crossing the main square to enthusiastic cheers and applause from the assembled crowd.

In his message, the pontiff called for global prayers, saying, “Let us not forget to pray for peace and for all those who find themselves in suffering and need because of war.”

The moment was a powerful reminder of the enduring connection between the papacy and the people, as well as the importance of spiritual reflection amid the challenges of our time.
