Paris Saint-Germain head coach Luis Enrique has challenged his squad to cap what he describes as the “best season in the club’s history” by securing victory in the inaugural 32-team FIFA Club World Cup final against Chelsea on Sunday. The clash, set to unfold at the MetLife Stadium, offers PSG the chance to become world champions for the next four years.
Fresh from clinching a domestic league and cup double and celebrating their maiden UEFA Champions League triumph in May, PSG are on the verge of a historic clean sweep. Yet Enrique remains wary of underestimating their English opponents.
“This is absolutely not going to be a simple formality,” the Spanish tactician cautioned during his pre-match press conference. “Chelsea are a very complete team. Enzo Maresca is doing a great job, and I really like what he’s building.”
PSG have dazzled en route to the final, overpowering Real Madrid 4-0 in the semi-finals and netting four goals against both Atletico Madrid and Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami earlier in the competition. Still, Enrique emphasized the unpredictability of a final: “There is always a winner and a loser, and that doesn’t mean the loser has necessarily done anything wrong.”
Looking ahead, he urged his players to embrace the moment and aim higher. “We want to finish this historic season in the best possible way,” said Enrique. “Now we must open the next chapter, win more major trophies, and make more history.”
PSG captain Marquinhos echoed his coach’s sentiment, underscoring the rare opportunity at hand: “This only happens every four years, and we don’t know where we’ll be in four years. It’s a golden opportunity.”
As PSG prepare for the final hurdle, the stakes are immense—not just a title, but the chance to etch their names into football history as world champions until 2029.
