Rwanda’s Leadership Sees Sudden Shift: President Kagame Appoints New Prime Minister

In a surprising political development, Rwandan President Paul Kagame dismissed Prime Minister Edouard Ngirente on Wednesday, marking an unexpected shift in the country’s leadership. Ngirente, who had served since July 2017 and was Rwanda’s 11th prime minister since independence, was promptly replaced.

President Kagame appointed Justin Nsengiyumva, the former Deputy Governor of the National Bank of Rwanda, as the new prime minister. Nsengiyumva responded to the announcement on social media, expressing his commitment to serving the nation “with humility and dedication.”

The presidency did not provide a reason for the leadership change. However, under Rwanda’s constitution, the appointment of a new prime minister triggers the formation of a new cabinet within 15 days — signaling further potential changes in the country’s executive leadership.

As Rwanda navigates this transition, the eyes of the region remain fixed on how this shift will influence the nation’s governance and policy direction.
