Tension in Kigumo as DCP Leaders Blocked from Holding Rally

A tense situation unfolded in Kigumo Constituency, Murang’a County, after police officers disrupted a planned political rally by leaders affiliated with the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP). The leaders, who had earlier attended a Sunday service at AIPCA Christ the King Church in Kahuro, had criticized the government over the recent reduction in school capitation.

As preparations for the rally began, police lobbed tear gas canisters and reportedly fired gunshots to disperse the gathering crowd. The unexpected confrontation caused alarm among local residents and escalated political tensions in the region.

DCP party leader Rigathi Gachagua, currently on an official visit to the United States, strongly condemned the incident. He demanded the immediate arrest and prosecution of both the attackers and the officers involved, calling the actions a clear violation of democratic freedoms.

This incident highlights growing political friction in the area and raises concerns about freedom of assembly and expression ahead of the next election cycle.
