In a shocking act of violence, a gunman armed with an assault-style rifle opened fire inside a Manhattan skyscraper on Monday evening, killing four people, including a New York City police officer, before taking his own life. The building at 345 Park Avenue houses major financial firms such as Blackstone and KPMG, as well as the headquarters of the National Football League.
New York City officials identified the assailant as 27-year-old Shane Tamura of Las Vegas, who reportedly drove cross-country to carry out the attack. Tamura had a documented history of mental illness but no significant criminal record. Investigators believe he acted alone, and a motive has yet to be determined.
The shooting began in the lobby and moved to the 33rd floor, where the suspect targeted the offices of a property management company. The rampage ended when Tamura fatally shot himself in the chest.
Among the victims was Officer Didarul Islam, 36, an NYPD officer and father of two, with a third child on the way. Islam, an immigrant from Bangladesh, was on duty as part of a police program assigning officers to private security details. Mayor Eric Adams called him a “true blue” hero, and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch praised his bravery and service.
Three other victims—two men and a woman—were also killed, while a fourth individual remains in critical condition. Law enforcement, including the FBI, swiftly secured the area, and eyewitnesses described the chaos and heavy police presence in the busy Midtown neighborhood.
The attack has once again raised concerns about mental health, gun violence, and public safety in urban commercial spaces. Authorities continue to investigate the incident and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
