Viktor Gyokeres: Arsenal’s New Attacking Weapon Ahead of 2025/26 Season

Arsenal have made a major statement ahead of the new Premier League season with the high-profile signing of Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon in a deal worth up to €76 million. As Mikel Arteta’s side looks to end a two-decade wait for the league title, Gyokeres could be the missing piece to unlock their full attacking potential.

Last season, Arsenal were strong defensively but often struggled for consistent attacking firepower—especially after Gabriel Jesus suffered a mid-season injury. In response, Arteta frequently rotated midfielders like Kai Havertz and Mikel Merino into forward roles, a strategy that lacked the clinical edge needed to rival champions Liverpool.

Enter Gyokeres: a powerful, fast, and relentless centre-forward known for his movement and finishing. After a quiet spell at Brighton, the 27-year-old rose to prominence with a breakout stint at Coventry City before exploding onto the European stage with Sporting Lisbon. There, he racked up an astounding 97 goals in 102 appearances, helping the club secure back-to-back league titles.

Gyokeres doesn’t just score—he overwhelms defenders, often dragging them out of position and creating space for teammates. His signature goal celebration, a hand-mask referencing Batman villain Bane, reflects both his brute strength and fearsome presence in the box. His arrival is expected to ease the creative burden on star winger Bukayo Saka and bring greater balance to Arsenal’s front line.

Sporting president Frederico Varandas initially resisted Gyokeres’ transfer, threatening fines as the striker pushed for the move. But the persistence paid off, as Arsenal finally secured a top-tier No. 9 after failed pursuits of Ollie Watkins and Benjamin Sesko.

Arteta, who previously admitted his side had “gone a step backwards” in attacking output, emphasized the need for prolific scorers: “If we have three players with over 25 goals each, bring them in—we’ll be a much better team.”

Gyokeres scored 54 goals in 52 matches last season, finishing second only to Kylian Mbappé in the European Golden Shoe race. He even netted a hat-trick—including two penalties—against Manchester City in the Champions League, offering a glimpse of his ability to deliver on the biggest stages.

Though some critics highlight his heavy reliance on penalties—19 goals came from the spot—Gyokeres remains confident in his readiness for English football: “The Portuguese league is very technical. It may not be as physical as England, but the level is really good,” he noted.

As Arsenal prepare for the 2025/26 campaign, both the club and their new striker have something to prove. With Gyokeres leading the line, Arsenal fans will hope this is finally the season their title drought comes to an end.
