Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has hinted that new signing Viktor Gyokeres could make his debut in the highly anticipated north London derby against Tottenham in Hong Kong this Thursday, in front of an expected 50,000 fans.
The Swedish striker, who joined Arsenal from Sporting Lisbon for $67 million, only linked up with the squad three days ago on their Asia tour. Despite limited training time, Arteta confirmed that Gyokeres may feature if cleared by the club’s medical team.
Gyokeres arrives at Arsenal after a record-breaking season with Sporting Lisbon, where he scored 39 goals and famously netted a Champions League hat-trick against Manchester City. The 27-year-old, who will don the iconic number 14 jersey once worn by Thierry Henry, scored 97 goals in 102 appearances for the Portuguese champions before signing a five-year deal with Arsenal that could rise to $89 million with add-ons.
His arrival boosts Arsenal’s summer spending to approximately $267 million, joining new signings Cristhian Mosquera, Martin Zubimendi, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Christian Norgaard, and Noni Madueke.
Arteta expressed satisfaction with the club’s aggressive transfer approach, as he aims to deliver Arsenal’s first Premier League title since Arsène Wenger’s 2003/04 “Invincibles” season.
Club captain Martin Odegaard welcomed Gyokeres, praising him as “a very complete striker” known for his strength, speed, intelligence, and finishing ability.
Arsenal’s clash with Tottenham will mark the fierce rivals’ first meeting outside the UK and could provide fans with their first glimpse of the prolific Swedish forward in red and white.
