The United States Embassy in Tanzania has issued a security alert urging American citizens to remain indoors as protests erupt across the country following the commencement of the general elections on Wednesday, October 29, 2025.

In an official statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), the Embassy confirmed reports of demonstrations in multiple regions, prompting a strong response from Tanzanian security forces. It directed all U.S. government personnel to shelter in place at their residences until further notice.

“There are reports of ongoing demonstrations in multiple locations. Security services are responding. U.S. Government personnel are advised to shelter in place at their residences,” the statement read.

The alert further advised U.S. citizens in Tanzania to avoid public gatherings, steer clear of demonstrations, and maintain a low profile while monitoring local media for updates.

“Avoid demonstrations. Avoid crowds. Keep a low profile. Monitor local media for updates. Be aware of your surroundings,” the advisory stated.

The Embassy, located along Old Bagamoyo Road in Msasani, Dar es Salaam, also provided emergency contact information and encouraged U.S. nationals to enrol in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive timely safety updates.

Tensions Rise During Tanzania’s General Election

The ongoing election has drawn significant attention both locally and internationally, with over 37 million registered voters casting ballots for the presidency and parliamentary seats.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan, representing the long-ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party, is seeking a second term in office. Despite the participation of 16 smaller opposition parties, none are perceived as strong challengers to CCM’s decades-long dominance.

Public frustration has been growing following the disqualification of opposition candidate Luhaga Mpina of the ACT-Wazalendo party on legal grounds, a move that has triggered street protests in several regions.

President Samia, who succeeded the late John Magufuli in 2021, was initially lauded for promoting political inclusivity and restoring press freedom. However, critics now accuse her government of backsliding on democratic reforms, citing arbitrary arrests and intimidation of opposition figures.

As security forces continue efforts to restore calm, the U.S. Embassy reaffirmed its commitment to monitoring the situation and prioritising the safety of U.S. citizens in Tanzania.
