Actor Michael B. Jordan has won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in the supernatural drama Sinners, where he portrays twin brothers confronting a dark supernatural force in the racially segregated American South.

The 39-year-old actor secured the award on his first Oscar nomination, following a successful awards-season run that included a win at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Jordan triumphed over a strong field of nominees that included Timothée Chalamet for Marty Supreme, Leonardo DiCaprio for One Battle After Another, Wagner Moura for The Secret Agent, and Ethan Hawke for Blue Moon.

In Sinners, Jordan plays Smoke and Stack, twin brothers and World War I veterans who return to Mississippi during the Prohibition era to open a juke joint. Their plans are disrupted by a sinister supernatural threat, as the film blends horror elements with themes of racial segregation and social injustice in the early 20th-century American South.

The project marks another collaboration between Jordan and director Ryan Coogler, whose partnership with the actor dates back to their critically acclaimed debut film Fruitvale Station. Since then, Coogler has frequently cast Jordan in prominent roles across several major productions.

With the win, Jordan joins a select group of Black actors who have received the Best Actor Oscar, following trailblazers such as Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, Forest Whitaker, and Will Smith.

In his acceptance speech, Jordan acknowledged the legacy of those who paved the way for him in the film industry.

“I stand here because of the people that came before me: Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, Halle Berry, Jamie Foxx, Forest Whitaker, Will Smith,” he said. “To be amongst those giants, amongst those greats, amongst my ancestors, amongst my guys thank you to everybody in this room and everybody at home for supporting me over my career.”

The victory marks a milestone moment in Jordan’s career, recognising his evolution from rising star to one of Hollywood’s leading actors.
