A fundraiser in Othaya for the ailing father of TikTok star Vincent Kaluma, popularly known as Kaluma Boy, took an unexpected turn on Sunday, September 28, 2025, when Chinga Ward MCA Hon. Thuku Meshack Kiruga was loudly heckled by the crowd, forcing him to cut short his remarks.

The event, which drew hundreds of TikTokers, Gen Z supporters, and well-wishers, had been organised to raise money for the treatment of Kaluma’s father, who has been bedridden after suffering a stroke. While the day was largely marked by emotional moments and generous giving, the MCA’s presence ignited open hostility.

Before inviting him to the stage, the master of ceremonies cautioned that any political talk would not be entertained. “This event is for supporting Kaluma, not for politics,” MC Chris said, urging the crowd to give the leader a fair hearing.

Despite this, murmurs began as soon as MCA Kiruga took the microphone. His attempt to frame his appearance as personal — citing that he had gone to school with Kaluma’s father — only intensified the backlash. The crowd erupted into boos that drowned out his words, even when he tried to announce his contribution.

Ultimately, Kiruga donated Ksh10,000 personally and delivered a further Ksh20,000 on behalf of Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga. Still, the gesture was met with little acknowledgement from the restless audience.

Videos shared on TikTok captured the MCA looking visibly frustrated as chants made it nearly impossible for him to speak.

The incident highlighted the scepticism many young Kenyans, particularly Gen Z, now direct toward politicians — even at non-political gatherings — and underscored how public figures are increasingly held to account in spaces traditionally reserved for community support.
