Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has called on Kenyans to take voter registration seriously ahead of the 2027 General Election, assuring citizens that their votes will be safeguarded.
In a statement issued on Thursday, October 2, 2025, the legislator emphasized the importance of both registering and turning out in large numbers on election day.
“Register to vote. Turn out and vote. We will protect your vote. We will make your vote count,” he declared.
Low Turnout Raises Concerns
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) began the nationwide voter registration exercise on Monday, September 29, 2025. However, the commission has already raised concerns about alarmingly low turnout.
IEBC Commissioner Ann Nderitu revealed that reports from field officers showed some registration centres were recording as few as three to five people per day. She stressed that voter registration is the foundation of democracy and warned that low participation could weaken citizens’ influence in shaping the country’s future.
“Every Kenyan is encouraged to register and to participate in the electoral processes because by doing that, that is how your vote becomes your voice,” she noted.
Voter Registration Requirements
Kenyans aged 18 and above are eligible to register through the IEBC’s Continuous Voter Registration program. Services available include:
- First-time registration
- Correction or updating of voter details
- Transfer of registration to a new electoral area
- Verification of voter information
To register, citizens must hold a valid Kenyan ID or passport, must not have previously registered, must not have committed an election offence within the last five years, and must not be of unsound mind. Registration is available at all IEBC Constituency Offices, except in areas currently holding by-elections.
With the 2027 polls just two years away, leaders like Babu Owino and the IEBC are urging Kenyans to take part in the process and ensure their voices are heard at the ballot.
