Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir has announced that both the national and county governments will assist families affected by the recent Mombasa boat tragedy, providing help with burial expenses and psychological support.

Speaking during an update on recovery efforts on Monday, October 13, 2025, the governor confirmed that all missing bodies had been recovered and identified, noting that the joint support initiative aims to ease the burden on grieving families.

“The bodies have been identified, and we have confirmation from both the national and county governments that we will assist with burial expenses,” Nassir said, adding that the county would ensure families receive both emotional and financial assistance to help them recover from the tragedy.

Counselling and Continued Support

Governor Nassir said the Mombasa County Government, in collaboration with the Kenya Red Cross, 911 rescue services, and community volunteers, will provide counselling and psychological care to survivors and the families of the deceased.

“Emotions are high at the site, and security officers will continue to maintain order. The Red Cross, 911, and county teams will offer psychological support to victims and their families,” he explained.

The governor also confirmed that security operations around the site will remain active as investigations continue, ensuring public safety and preventing any further incidents.

New Safety Measures Introduced

In response to the tragedy, Governor Nassir announced new safety protocols for all sea-related events in Mombasa. Going forward, such activities will require clearance from the County Security Committee before being approved.

The county government also plans to recruit lifeguards from local Beach Management Units to strengthen disaster preparedness and improve emergency response along the coastline.

Governor Nassir emphasized that these measures are part of a broader effort to enhance maritime safety, prevent similar tragedies, and ensure rapid response in future emergencies.
