Kwale County, Kenya – Retired Chief Justice David Maraga, now the presidential flag bearer of the United Green Movement (UGM) Party, has sharply criticized the current administration, saying Kenya is moving in the wrong direction due to poor leadership and governance.

Speaking during a voter registration drive in Kinango Constituency, Maraga accused President William Ruto’s regime of being entangled in rampant corruption, alleging that civil servants are looting public resources and crippling service delivery across key sectors.

“I will deal with this. I will correct all this and take our country to where it should be. I want to stop theft of public funds,” Maraga declared.

Corruption and Education Crisis

Maraga singled out the education sector, warning that continued mismanagement threatens Kenya’s future. He expressed concern over the theft of public resources, saying funds meant for schools and hospitals are often diverted or sent to non-existent institutions.

“Kenya is not poor. It is just that money meant for our schools is stolen. We have seen many times money is sent to non-existent schools… non-existent hospitals,” he said.

Youth Unemployment

The former Chief Justice also highlighted the high rate of youth unemployment, linking it to corruption and poor governance. He argued that the misuse of public funds has deprived young people of opportunities, leaving them vulnerable and frustrated.

Political Context

Maraga’s remarks come as he positions himself as a reformist candidate under the UGM Party, pledging to restore integrity in public service and ensure accountability in government. His campaign message centers on tackling corruption, strengthening institutions, and redirecting resources to benefit ordinary Kenyans.

Conclusion

With his entry into the presidential race, David Maraga is framing himself as a leader committed to fighting corruption and safeguarding Kenya’s future. His criticism of the current administration underscores growing political tensions as the country heads toward the next election cycle.
