Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali has joined global leaders in mourning the death of Kenya’s former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga.
In an official statement shared on his X account on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, Prime Minister Abiy expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the veteran Kenyan statesman. He extended heartfelt condolences to Odinga’s family and the people of Kenya, honoring Odinga’s lasting impact on the nation’s democratic journey and political transformation.
Prime Minister Abiy described Raila Odinga as a respected and visionary leader whose dedication to justice, democracy, and regional unity left a profound mark not only on Kenya but on the entire East African region. He emphasized Ethiopia’s solidarity with Kenya during this time of mourning, recognizing Odinga’s contributions to advancing regional cooperation and peace.
“On behalf of the Government of Ethiopia, I extend my sincere condolences on the passing of former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga. May he rest in peace,” Abiy Ahmed stated.
Raila Odinga, who served as Kenya’s Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013, passed away in India, where he had been undergoing medical treatment. Reports indicate that he suffered a cardiac arrest during a morning walk.
Odinga’s death marks the end of an era for Kenya’s political landscape, where he was widely regarded as a pillar of opposition politics and a champion of democratic reform.
