Tributes continue to pour in from around the world following the passing of Kenya’s former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga, with the African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, and India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, joining global leaders in mourning the veteran statesman.

At Raila Odinga’s Opoda home in Siaya County, grief has engulfed the community, with family members, supporters, and residents of Bondo mourning the loss of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader who defined Kenya’s political landscape for decades.

In his condolence message issued on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, AUC Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf — who notably defeated Odinga in the race for the AU Commission Chairperson earlier this year — described Raila as a towering figure in African politics and a relentless advocate for democracy and good governance.

“H.E. Raila Odinga was a towering figure in Kenya’s political life and a steadfast champion of democracy, good governance, and people-centred development. His decades-long commitment to justice, pluralism, and democratic reform left an indelible mark not only on Kenya but across the African continent,” Youssouf said.

He further praised Odinga’s courage, resilience, and devotion to democratic ideals, noting that his influence transcended Kenya’s borders.

“Mr. Odinga’s contributions extended far beyond national borders. As the African Union High Representative for Infrastructure Development in Africa, he worked tirelessly to promote the continent’s integration and connectivity agenda, laying vital groundwork for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and Africa’s socio-economic transformation,” he added.

Meanwhile, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deep sorrow at Odinga’s passing, describing him as both a dear friend and a cherished ally of India.

“Deeply saddened by the passing of my dear friend and former Prime Minister of Kenya, Mr. Raila Odinga. He was a towering statesman and a cherished friend of India. I had the privilege of knowing him closely since my days as Chief Minister of Gujarat, and our friendship endured over the years,” Modi said.

Prime Minister Modi highlighted Odinga’s affection for Indian culture and traditional medicine, recalling his admiration for Ayurveda and its impact on his family.

“He had a special affection for India, our culture, values, and ancient wisdom. This was reflected in his efforts to strengthen India–Kenya ties. I extend my deepest condolences to his family, friends, and to the people of Kenya in this hour of grief,” he added.

Odinga’s passing continues to resonate across Africa and beyond, with world leaders honoring his legacy as a champion of democracy, regional integration, and Pan-African unity.
