The body of Kenya’s late former Prime Minister, Raila Amollo Odinga, arrived at Kisumu International Airport early Saturday morning aboard a Kenya Air Force military jet, marking a deeply emotional moment for thousands of mourners gathered to receive the revered statesman.
The aircraft touched down at 7:30 a.m. on October 18, 2025, under heavy security and solemn silence. The remains of the veteran politician will lie in state at Mamboleo Grounds throughout the day, allowing members of the public to pay their final respects. The casket, draped in the national flag, will be accessible to residents who will file past in an organized procession.
By sunrise, the grounds were already filled to capacity. Women sang traditional Luo dirges, while men blew vuvuzelas and waved placards bearing Raila’s portrait. Youth groups from Siaya, Homa Bay, and Migori joined in the chants of “Baba! Baba!” a nickname affectionately associated with the late leader.
Kisumu’s main streets were jammed from the early morning hours as thousands of residents lined up along major roads, waving flags, singing liberation songs, and awaiting the arrival of their political icon. The atmosphere was charged with emotion as mourners anticipated a final glimpse of a man whose influence shaped the region’s political landscape for decades.
Following the public viewing, the casket will be transported to Bondo in Siaya County under full state honors, escorted by security personnel and an official convoy.
Security has been heightened in both Kisumu and Bondo, with national and local authorities working in close coordination to ensure order and safety. Roads leading to Mamboleo have been cleared and secured, while officials continue to urge mourners to arrive early and maintain calm throughout the proceedings.
Raila Odinga’s deep roots in the Nyanza region remain evident as the community and the nation unites in grief to celebrate the life and legacy of one of Kenya’s most influential leaders.
