Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has announced plans to lobby the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) National Delegates Convention (NDC) to formally elect Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Oginga as the official successor to the late party leader Raila Amolo Odinga.

Speaking during a press briefing at Opoda Farm in Siaya County on Friday, October 17, 2025, Wandayi said that the NDC would be convened shortly after Raila’s burial to confirm Oburu’s appointment and ensure a smooth transition within the party.

“As a life member of ODM, I will be proposing that the party convene very quickly after Baba’s send-off to formally elect Dr. Oburu Odinga as the ODM Party Leader,” Wandayi stated.

He described Oburu, Raila’s elder brother, as a seasoned and composed leader capable of steering the movement through its next chapter.

“We believe Dr. Oburu has the experience, wisdom, and stability required to keep ODM united and vibrant,” he added.

Following Raila’s passing, the ODM National Executive Council (NEC) appointed Oburu as interim party leader, a move Wandayi praised as both strategic and stabilising during a period of national mourning.

“ODM has made a wise decision to appoint Dr. Oburu as acting party leader. It ensures continuity and preserves the spirit of the movement,” he said.

Continued Partnership with President Ruto

Wandayi also reaffirmed ODM’s commitment to its working relationship with President William Ruto, saying the alliance would remain intact beyond the 2027 General Elections.

“Baba has left us in government, under the leadership of President Ruto, and that is where we intend to stay. We will walk step by step with the President, now and beyond 2027,” Wandayi declared.

He maintained that the UDA–ODM cooperation would continue to strengthen, citing Ruto’s goodwill toward Raila and the honour of granting him a state burial as evidence of mutual respect.

“We are going to walk with Ruto, step by step. Under Dr. Oburu Oginga’s leadership, we will work closely with UDA toward a broad-based, inclusive government,” he concluded.

The announcement comes amid heightened speculation over ODM’s political direction following Raila Odinga’s death, as the party navigates the delicate balance of succession and coalition politics in Kenya’s evolving landscape.
