Police in Konoin Sub-County, Bomet County, have arrested a key suspect linked to the brutal assault of two children in Taboino village, Cheptalal location, an incident that left one child dead and another hospitalised.

According to a police report, the nine-year-old girl succumbed to her injuries at Longisa Hospital on Friday, November 7, 2025, while her 13-year-old brother remains under medical care with multiple injuries.

The suspect was apprehended shortly after the girl’s death was reported. “It was reported by Johnston Koech, Chief of Kitala Location, that on the night of November 4, 2025, at around 8:00 p.m., a person of interest assaulted her two children at Taboino village in Cheptalal location, Konoin Sub-County,” the report stated.

The suspect reportedly took her 13-year-old son to Longisa Hospital on Wednesday, November 5, where he was admitted with a swollen face and bruises across his body. The following day, Thursday, November 6, she brought in her nine-year-old daughter, Joan Chepkoech, who had sustained severe injuries to the head and was bleeding from the nose. The young girl succumbed to her injuries the next morning.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the children were beaten with a wooden stick, and the suspect failed to report the assault to police. Instead, she allegedly went into hiding in the Longisa area before eventually taking the children to the hospital.

Officers from Cheptalal Police Station and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Konoin launched a swift response to the incident. The deceased’s body has since been moved to Longisa Hospital Mortuary for a postmortem examination, while her brother continues to receive treatment at the same facility.

Police confirmed that the suspect has been taken into custody, and investigations into the assault are ongoing.
