Travel and food content creator Raymond Kahuma recently embarked on a bold project to make the world’s largest chapati, aiming to surpass the existing Guinness World Record. He documented the ambitious attempt on his YouTube channel on Friday, November 14, 2025.

Kahuma, known for setting the Guinness World Record for the largest Ugandan Rolex in 2022 and for the fastest time to make three chapatis, sought to cook a 200-kilogram chapati. The current record, set in Jamnagar, India, in 2012, stands at 145 kilograms with a three-metre diameter.

The preparation was extensive. Kahuma built a 3.5-metre-diameter brick stove, created a reinforced custom frying pan from six large metal pieces, and crafted oversized rolling pins and 20 thin wooden planks to prevent the chapati from sticking or burning. A square metal frame was also constructed to suspend a butcher’s scale for weighing the chapati. In total, preparation costs exceeded Ksh500,000.

For the cooking process, 153 kilograms of flour were mixed with water, salt, sugar, oil, and turmeric to make two giant buckets of dough. The dough was then transferred to the frying pan and rolled flat for over an hour using a large metal ring to shape it. The pan was placed on the stove, heated with four bags of charcoal.

Despite meticulous planning, Kahuma and his team faced a major setback when the wooden planks failed to slide under the chapati, making it impossible to cook evenly.

Kahuma expressed his disappointment in the video, revealing that the entire attempt had cost Ksh1.1 million. “It was extremely painful, but we had to call this world record attempt a failure. From preparation costs to the final attempt, I spent a total of Ksh1.1 million on this chapati,” he said, encouraging followers to share ideas for future record-breaking food challenges.
