A family from Makueni County is grieving the loss of four members following a devastating road accident on Friday, November 21, 2025, at Ngoluni market along the Itangini-Tawa road, which claimed six lives in total.

According to Mbooni East Subcounty Police Commander Eprhahim Karani, the tragedy occurred when a speeding lorry collided with a stationary 14-seater matatu as passengers were boarding. The deceased, a mother and her three children, were on their way from Makueni Boys to pick up a student who had just completed the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams.

Student and sibling survive
The KCSE student and her younger brother, a grade one pupil, survived the accident and are among eleven injured who are currently receiving treatment at Makueni County Referral Hospital. The father, Musili Ngelu, was visibly distraught while viewing the bodies at Tawa Hospital mortuary.

Catherine Mwanzia, a relative, recounted, “I arrived last night and found the two boys at the hospital, but I don’t know the fate of the other four,” she said tearfully.

Driver blamed for crash
Mulei Mulinge, who lost his wife Zipporah Mulei, blamed the lorry driver for the accident. Survivor Jackson Mutiso, who was aboard the truck transporting building materials, explained that the driver lost control after overspeeding and hit the stationary matatu. Mutiso, recovering from soft tissue injuries, said, “We later found ourselves having caused the accident before the driver escaped into hiding.”

Medical update
Medics confirmed that eleven survivors were received at the facility, with one patient in critical condition in the intensive care unit. Dr. Masila noted that four of the injured were children under ten. “Our medical personnel are doing everything possible to stabilise the critically injured patient,” he said, adding that the other patients are in stable condition, with one already recovering post-surgery.
