Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has revealed that he deliberately steers clear of social media to protect himself and his family from online abuse, even if it means missing out on lucrative sponsorship deals.

The Portuguese coach has faced a challenging first year at Old Trafford. Last season, United finished 15th in the Premier League, marking their worst top-flight performance since relegation in 1973/74, and failed to qualify for European competition. However, recent improvements have lifted Amorim’s side to seventh place ahead of Thursday’s clash with West Ham.

“I don’t read it. I protect myself,” Amorim said during a pre-match press conference on Wednesday. “I don’t watch TV when they talk about Manchester United. Not because I don’t agree most of the time I do but it is a way of being healthy. It’s enough for me to know when we lose, draw, or play poorly. I don’t need external opinions to affect me.”

Amorim acknowledged that avoiding social media has financial consequences. “Of course I lose money in sponsorships. On Instagram I could earn a lot. But the quality of my life and the protection of my family outweigh any extra income. Some more dollars or pounds are not worth it,” he said.

The manager also provided updates on his squad ahead of the busy festive schedule. Forward Matheus Cunha is set to return from injury after missing the last two games, offering a timely boost. “He has more levels to go. He is at a different club with different pressure, but he copes well. At the start, he struggled because he wasn’t scoring and overthought the numbers,” Amorim noted.

The Brazilian’s influence in the team is significant, but the coach emphasized there is still room for growth both defensively and offensively. United will continue to be without Harry Maguire and Benjamin Sesko due to injury.
