Chelsea endured a disappointing night in the Premier League as they were stunned 3-1 by struggling Leeds at Elland Road on Wednesday, dealing a significant blow to their title ambitions.

Enzo Maresca’s team struggled from the start, conceding twice in the first half to Jaka Bijol and Ao Tanaka. Pedro Neto pulled one back early in the second half, but Chelsea’s hopes were dashed when Dominic Calvert-Lewin netted a third goal late on. The defeat to a side sitting fourth from bottom, and on a four-game losing streak, leaves Chelsea nine points adrift of leaders Arsenal and marks their first loss in eight matches across all competitions.

“There was nobody at their best level,” Maresca admitted. “They were better than us in all aspects and deserved to win. A very poor night. We performed well against Arsenal and Barcelona, but we cannot always expect the same performances. We need to understand what went wrong and reset.”

Chelsea were without key midfielder Moises Caicedo, who was suspended following his red card in Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Arsenal. Despite taking the lead through Trevoh Chalobah in that match, they were unable to maintain the advantage as Mikel Merino equalized.

Maresca also rotated his squad, resting Neto, Reece James, and Wesley Fofana, but Chelsea appeared fatigued from their recent efforts with ten men against Arsenal. Leeds capitalized fully on the visitors’ mental and physical exhaustion.

“I hope this was just a bad night,” Maresca said. “They were superior in the duels. In the Premier League, every game requires full performance, at home or away. We missed Moises tonight and will continue to feel his absence.”

Leeds opened the scoring early when Anton Stach’s corner found Bijol, who powered a header past Robert Sanchez. Chelsea’s defensive lapses continued, highlighted by Pascal Struijk’s near-miss header from another corner. Tanaka then added a stunning second just before halftime, a reminder of the uphill battle Chelsea faced.

Chelsea, historically unable to overturn a two-goal halftime deficit in Premier League away matches, found some hope when Neto scored in the 50th minute, his fifth league goal of the season. Maresca also introduced Cole Palmer and Alejandro Garnacho in an attempt to spark a comeback, nearly creating an equalizer.

However, Chelsea’s errors proved costly. Malo Gusto’s poor pass inside his own area led to a sequence that ended with Calvert-Lewin tapping home into an empty net, securing Leeds’ emphatic victory.

The defeat leaves Chelsea facing a critical period in their title race, as they look to regroup and recover form in the coming fixtures.
