Jimmy Irungu, who was attempting an 80-hour tree-hugging challenge to raise awareness for cancer patients, remains under 24-hour medical observation at Murang’a County Hospital after collapsing just one hour shy of completing his goal.
Irungu began the challenge on Sunday, January 4, 2026, at 9:27 pm and was expected to finish on Thursday, January 8. Dr. James Kahura, the county physician, said Irungu was rushed to the hospital after three days at the site due to extreme exhaustion and severe dehydration, which had begun to trigger multi-organ failure.
“We observed acute kidney injury, significant muscle fatigue, and elevated muscle enzymes. He required resuscitation and fluids to restore electrolyte balance. He is now stabilizing but will remain under close observation to prevent further organ complications,” Dr. Kahura explained.
The doctor emphasized the risks of extreme endurance challenges, especially those involving prolonged periods without food or sleep. He recommended that anyone attempting such feats undergo thorough medical evaluation and have a professional medical team on hand. Dr. Kahura also advised taking isotonic fluids to maintain electrolyte balance during physically demanding activities.
Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata visited Irungu in the hospital, praising the noble cause but stressing that the participant’s health must come first. The governor confirmed that the county will support Irungu’s mission and has provided a donation to assist with his immediate care.
Governor Kang’ata acknowledged the gaps in cancer care within the county, noting the need for a coordinated effort to address the issue. Irungu called for the establishment of a dedicated cancer center in Murang’a to provide free treatment to patients.
“I have lost family and friends to cancer, which is why I am pushing for it to be recognized as a national health priority. I also plan to establish a foundation to ensure affordable medical care for cancer patients,” Irungu stated.
The incident highlights both the dedication of individuals championing health causes and the importance of balancing endurance challenges with personal safety.
