The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has formally declared a vacancy in the Supreme Court following the death of Justice Mohamed Ibrahim, opening the door for qualified Kenyans to apply for one of the country’s highest judicial offices.

In a Gazette notice, Chief Justice and JSC Chairperson Martha Koome invited eligible candidates to submit applications in line with the Constitution, the Judicial Service Act and Article 166 of the Constitution. The successful applicant will serve on the apex court until the mandatory retirement age of 70, with the option of early retirement at 65.

The JSC said the position attracts a gross monthly salary of between Ksh. 956,192 and Ksh. 1,268,996, exclusive of additional benefits, as set by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission.

To qualify, applicants must hold a law degree from a recognised university or be admitted as advocates of the High Court of Kenya. They are also required to have a minimum of 15 years’ experience, either as a judge of a superior court or as a distinguished legal practitioner, academic or judicial officer.

In addition, candidates must meet the leadership, integrity and ethical standards outlined in Chapter Six of the Constitution.

Justice Ibrahim passed away on December 17, 2025, creating a vacancy on the seven-member Supreme Court bench. He was widely regarded for his role in shaping Kenya’s constitutional jurisprudence and his long service in the Judiciary.

The JSC has advised interested and qualified candidates to submit their applications through the commission’s online recruitment portal within the stipulated timelines.
