The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) National Chairperson Gladys Wanga has urged party members to close ranks ahead of the 2027 General Election, warning that internal divisions could weaken the party’s performance even in its traditional strongholds.

Speaking during an interview on Ramogi TV on Tuesday evening, the Homa Bay Governor said ODM must prioritise unity and discipline to safeguard its electoral base, noting that infighting can be as damaging as opposition pressure.

“We want to strengthen our party in all our strongholds. We cannot afford too much ‘friendly fire’. Friendly fire also kills,” Wanga said, underscoring the risks posed by internal rivalry.

She cited the 2017 General Election as a lesson, recalling that ODM lost key seats, including the Lang’ata parliamentary seat in Nairobi, during a period when the party was part of a coalition arrangement.

“This is not the first time we are in a coalition. In 2017, we lost seats such as Lang’ata. We must remain united and strong if we are to win and retain our strongholds,” she added.

Wanga also praised ODM leader Dr Oburu Oginga for providing stability and direction during a difficult transition period following the death of the party’s founding leader, Raila Odinga. She said his leadership had helped steer the party through uncertainty and internal challenges.

Addressing her own political future, Wanga said she remains confident but committed to democratic processes within the party. She noted that she would subject herself to ODM nominations, alongside other aspirants in Homa Bay County.

“Defeating me will not be easy, but I will still present myself for party nominations. All seats will be subjected to free and fair nominations,” she said.

The ODM chairperson also acknowledged the contribution of Mama Ida Odinga, thanking her for speaking out in defence of the party and supporting efforts to maintain unity.

The interview comes at a time when ODM continues to reflect on its future direction and leadership following the passing of Raila Odinga, whose influence shaped the party for decades as its founding leader and long-time presidential candidate.
