Kitutu Chache Constituency Member of Parliament Anthony Kibagendi has been arraigned and granted a Ksh.100,000 cash bail following charges of assault.

Appearing before Narok Resident Magistrate Ester Mwikali Mutuku, Kibagendi was accused of assaulting Asterico Omariba on November 27, 2025, in Kisii town, causing him bodily harm.

Case Background

The case was initially filed at a Kisii court but later transferred to Narok. Reports indicate that Kibagendi had previously been granted a Ksh.50,000 bond under different terms.

The defence team, led by Kisii Senator Okong’o Omogeni, raised concerns over what they termed misuse of public resources and harassment of the accused.

“We have seen abuse of power by the state, as he was arrested by a contingent of six vehicles, taken around in Nairobi, driven to Nyamira and finally spent his night in Keroka Police Station, just the way the previous regime used to behave,” Omogeni told the media outside the court.

He further claimed that despite Kibagendi being out on cash bail granted by the High Court, state agencies including the DCI and ODPP disregarded the court order.

Political Reactions

Narok Town Ward MCA Douglas Masikonde also condemned the arrest, calling it harassment and impunity.

“The reason why we say one term is because of some of these things; we are saddened by the harassment meted at our MP. He was arrested and arraigned, then today he was rearrested on the same matter that took him to court. That is impunity, and we are not going to allow it to continue happening. So let us stand firm,” Masikonde said.

Dramatic Arrest

Kibagendi was dramatically arrested by DCI detectives from Muthaiga Police Station on Tuesday. On his official Facebook account, the MP claimed he had been forcefully apprehended and detained.

“I have been aggressively blocked by DCI officers and arrested. Being taken to DCI HQS, Muthaiga Police Station,” he wrote.

Viral Video Evidence

The charges stem from a viral CCTV video dated November 2025, which allegedly captured Kibagendi storming a restaurant in Kisii town and physically assaulting local political operative Enock Omariba. The footage showed the MP kicking and beating Omariba as bystanders attempted to intervene.

The case will resume for hearing at the Narok court on March 2, 2026. The proceedings are expected to draw significant public and political attention, given the high-profile nature of the accused and the controversy surrounding his arrest.
