A Meru law court is set to make a key ruling on Tuesday on whether to release or detain a Catholic nun, Sister Caroline Kanjiru, who is being held in connection with the murder of fellow nun Sister Ansilime Karimi from Nkabune.
During a mention before the court, police officer Abdul Tulla requested that Sister Caroline be detained for 14 more days to allow investigators time to complete their inquiries. He told the court that the suspect posed a flight risk, citing inconsistencies in her account of events.
According to investigators, Sister Caroline had claimed that she was taking the deceased to Nkubu Hospital when she allegedly died en route. However, police reports indicate that bruises on the victim’s hands and legs suggest foul play, raising doubts about the nun’s version of events.
The defense, led by Sister Caroline’s lawyer, opposed the application, arguing that the nun was not a flight risk and should be released on bond, assuring the court of her cooperation throughout the investigation.
The court is expected to deliver its ruling on the detention request on Tuesday, determining whether Sister Caroline will remain in custody or be released as investigations continue.
