Nairobi, Kenya – Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi has issued a strong call for the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to field a presidential candidate in the 2027 general election, rejecting suggestions that the party should shelve its ambitions and rally behind President William Ruto.
Speaking on the party’s future following the passing of longtime leader Raila Odinga, Osotsi emphasized that ODM remains a political powerhouse with several capable leaders ready to step forward.
Honoring Raila’s Vision
Osotsi recalled a meeting of Members of Parliament along Mombasa Road where Raila explicitly dismissed claims that ODM would not present a candidate.
“Baba asked us, ‘Who told you ODM will support someone else? Who told you that in 2027 ODM won’t have a candidate?’” Osotsi remarked. “Now that Baba has passed, we must honor that vision.”
Successors and Leadership
The Senator dismissed claims that ODM lacks a formidable successor, pointing to himself, Siaya Governor James Orengo, and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino as examples of leaders capable of seeking the nation’s highest office.
The 10-Point Agenda
Central to Osotsi’s argument is the 10-point agenda signed between Raila Odinga and President Ruto during the formation of the broad-based government. He insisted that key issues such as electoral justice and police accountability cannot be ignored.
Osotsi demanded compensation for families of young protesters killed by police and prosecution of officers involved. He further reiterated the need for transparency regarding the last election, stating:
“The truth must be told.”
Message to ODM Leadership
In a direct appeal to ODM party leader Oburu Oginga, Osotsi urged the current leadership to emulate Raila’s consultative style. He warned that ignoring grassroots voices could lead to the party’s downfall.
“We have no problem with our leader Oburu Oginga, but he must listen to people’s views. When there was a problem, Baba would gather everyone and listen. If you ignore what the people are saying, you cause destruction within the party,” Osotsi said.
Unity Between Communities
Osotsi emphasized the importance of a unified front between the Luhya and Luo communities, describing their cooperation as vital for ODM’s strength heading into the next election cycle.
Conclusion
Senator Osotsi’s remarks underscore the growing debate within ODM about its future direction after Raila Odinga. His demand for a presidential candidate reflects both a desire to honor Raila’s legacy and a push to ensure ODM remains a central player in Kenya’s political landscape as 2027 approaches.
