Kenya’s national carrier, Kenya Airways, has announced significant flight disruptions at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) due to the ongoing strike by the Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU).

Impact on Passengers

In a statement issued on Monday, the airline confirmed that the industrial action has affected both departures and arrivals, advising passengers to expect schedule adjustments and delays.

“We sincerely regret the inconvenience and are working closely with the relevant aviation authorities and airport stakeholders to minimize disruption and maintain safe operations,” the carrier noted.

Passengers have been urged to check their flight status before heading to the airport, monitor official Kenya Airways communication channels for updates, or explore rebooking options.

Aviation Authority Response

The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) stated that it has activated operational continuity measures to safeguard critical aviation functions. Air navigation and safety services remain operational under established contingency protocols.

“The Authority continues to engage relevant stakeholders in line with applicable labour laws and court directions. We reiterate our respect for due process and remain open to constructive dialogue,” KCAA said.

Union Demands

KAWU has accused employers of failing to resolve long-standing labour grievances, including the lack of salary reviews for workers who have served for more than 11 years. The union is also pushing for reforms such as:

  • Proper execution of Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBA).
  • Inclusion of contract staff in pensionable employment terms.

Broader Implications

The strike underscores ongoing tensions in Kenya’s aviation sector, where workers are demanding fair compensation and improved employment conditions. With Kenya Airways being a critical link for regional and international travel, the disruptions highlight the urgent need for dialogue between unions, employers, and regulators to restore stability at JKIA.
