Senegalese musician Sahad Sarr has unveiled his new album, African West, a project that has been a decade in the making and reflects his ambition to reshape global musical influences through an unapologetically African lens.
A Unique Sonic Identity
Sarr’s sound draws inspiration from African, American, and global traditions, but he insists on creating music that defies imposed expectations.
“We’re calling for an uninhibited youth, a new way of relating to the world, a new way of thinking about globalisation in our own way. Not the kind of globalisation that’s been imposed on us… People are waiting for Africa to produce a certain type of sound. But we’re saying no, we’ll produce the kind of sound we want to produce. We’re creating our own markets, we’re going to create our own sonic identities,” Sarr explained.
Rooted in African Pride
Driven by pride in his heritage and a deep connection to Senegal, Sarr leads projects that inspire young people to be ambitious and embrace creativity. He describes African West as both a musical journey and a decolonial manifesto, weaving together sounds from Guinea-Conakry, Mali, Nigeria, and Ghana.
“I picture myself at a post-independence radio station in the 1970s… African West Station is also a decolonial plea. It’s a radio station that vibrates and broadcasts its waves across the whole of West Africa,” he said.
Global Recognition
Sarr has performed with his band across the world, bringing his unique sound to international audiences. In April 2026, he will represent Senegal at the international jazz festival in Germany, further cementing his role as a cultural ambassador for African music.
Conclusion
With African West, Sahad Sarr is not only showcasing a decade of musical evolution but also challenging global narratives about African creativity. His work embodies resilience, pride, and a vision for a new generation of African artists carving out their own sonic identities.
