The Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya (PSK) has addressed a viral video alleging that a pharmacy staff member dispensed a skin medication instead of the prescribed eye drops for a baby.
In the video, the concerned mother confronts the pharmacy employee, explaining that she had applied the medication five times daily according to the prescription instructions. She reported that the drug caused an adverse reaction, prompting her to question the staff member, who later issued an apology.
PSK President Dr. Wairimu Mbogo, in a statement on Friday, February 27, clarified that the individual in the video is neither a licensed pharmacist nor a registered member of the society.
“This matter should be approached as a patient safety issue. It presents an opportunity to strengthen systems, improve oversight and enhance public trust in pharmaceutical care,” Dr. Mbogo stated.
The society has urged the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) to investigate the incident and ensure that the outlet operates in compliance with licensing requirements. Additionally, PSK called for stricter enforcement of patient safety standards across all pharmacy premises.
“The public should be reassured that such incidents are not reflective of standard pharmaceutical practice in Kenya. This matter is being treated with the seriousness it deserves, and appropriate regulatory mechanisms are in place to address any confirmed breaches,” the statement added.
The incident underscores the need for vigilance in pharmaceutical practice and highlights the importance of regulated, licensed professionals in safeguarding patient health.
