Pep Guardiola has played down concerns over Erling Haaland’s fitness after the striker missed Manchester CityLeeds United on Saturday, insisting the issue is not serious.
Haaland was a notable absentee from City’s starting line-up at Elland Road after picking up a minor knock during training on Thursday. His absence sparked speculation given the importance of the fixture in the title race, but Guardiola moved quickly to calm fears.
“I don’t think it is a big issue,” Guardiola said after the match. “We will see. I wish he comes back as soon as possible.”
City grind out vital win
Despite missing their leading scorer, City showed resilience and tactical discipline to claim their fourth consecutive league win. A first-half goal from Antoine Semenyo proved decisive, allowing Guardiola’s side to stay firmly in contention for the title.
The victory leaves City just two points behind leaders Arsenal, who face Chelsea on Sunday, intensifying pressure at the top of the Premier League table.
Guardiola praised his players’ mentality and execution in a demanding away environment. “Complete game, in a tough, tough place. With 10 games left, this is the moment to be decisive,” he said.
New faces stepping up
The City manager also highlighted the performances of Rayan Cherki and Rayan Aït-Nouri, whose build-up play contributed to the winning goal. Both are part of a broader squad refresh overseen by Guardiola over the past 18 months.
“These players have a long future here,” Guardiola noted. “Cherki, for me, was outstanding solid, aggressive with the ball. The commitment from everyone was exceptional.”
Focus remains on consistency
While City boast a strong league record even in matches Haaland does not feature, Guardiola acknowledged that the Norwegian forward remains central to their ambitions. However, he resisted speculation about the title run-in, instead stressing consistency and recovery during a congested schedule.
“One game at a time,” he said. “People are tired, every match is difficult. The Premier League is better than ever.”
Guardiola also reiterated the club’s broader priorities, pointing to City’s sustained presence in European football. “Qualifying for the UEFA Champions League is the main target. We are the only English club to be there every year for more than a decade.”
With the season entering its decisive phase, City remain firmly in control of their destiny and hopeful that Haaland’s return will come sooner rather than later.
