Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane believes he is firmly on track to break Robert Lewandowski’s single-season Bundesliga goals record following his brace in Saturday’s thrilling 3-2 victory at Borussia Dortmund.
Kane opened the scoring with a composed finish before calmly converting a penalty, helping Bayern overturn a deficit and effectively ending Dortmund’s title challenge. The England captain has now scored in four consecutive league games, bringing his Bundesliga tally this season to 30 goals, just 11 shy of Lewandowski’s 41-goal record set in the 2020-21 campaign.
“I’m in a good moment. I’ve got to keep doing what I’m doing,” Kane told Sky Germany, adding that he is “for sure” on course to surpass Lewandowski’s mark with 10 games remaining.
“I know it’s a question pretty much after every game right now, but there’s still a lot of games to play. I need to try and be consistent over that period. We’ll see come late April, start of May, if it’s possible.”
Lewandowski broke the previous record held by German legend Gerd Müller, whose 40-goal campaign in 1971-72 was considered untouchable until Lewandowski’s historic run. Kane, 32, now has 45 goals in all competitions this season the best tally of his career with a third of the campaign still to play.
“Sometimes as a striker you go through spells where almost everything you touch goes into the back of the net whether you finish it well or whether you don’t,” Kane told ESPN, reflecting on his current form.
The win not only added to Kane’s personal milestones but also solidified Bayern’s position at the top of the Bundesliga. With the victory, they are 11 points clear of Dortmund, putting them firmly on course for another league title. Kane, however, warned his teammates not to grow complacent.
“I don’t think it’s over. We had an 11-point lead a few weeks ago, and we saw how quickly it can change within two results,” he said. “So we have to stay focused. It was obviously a big game, a big momentum shift for us, 11 points. We’re in a good position.”
With Kane maintaining his lethal form and Bayern in commanding league position, the remainder of the season promises both a potential historic record and another Bundesliga triumph for the German giants.
