Melbourne, Australia – Novak Djokovic admitted fortune was on his side after opponent Lorenzo Musetti retired hurt on Wednesday, sending the Serbian great into the semi-finals of the Australian Open. The 38-year-old, chasing a historic 25th Grand Slam crown, will now face either reigning two-time champion Jannik Sinner or American Ben Shelton.
Djokovic’s Lucky Escape
Djokovic’s path through the tournament has been unusually smooth, aided by withdrawals. His last-16 opponent Jakub Mensik pulled out before a ball was struck, and Musetti was forced to retire while leading 6-4, 6-3, 1-3 on Rod Laver Arena.
The Italian fifth seed had dominated the match until he required treatment for an upper right leg injury. With his movement severely restricted, he was unable to continue.
“I feel really sorry for him, he was the far better player, I was on my way home tonight,” Djokovic admitted. “He should have been the winner today no doubt. I am extremely lucky to get through this one.”
Djokovic, who also received treatment for a blister during the match, said he would “double [his] prayers and gratitude” for the opportunity to continue his pursuit of the record.
Pegula vs. Rybakina Showdown
Earlier on day 11, Jessica Pegula and Elena Rybakina booked their places in the semi-finals with straight-set victories.
- Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon champion, stunned world number two Iga Swiatek 7-5, 6-1. The Moscow-born Kazakh, who reached the Melbourne final in 2023, said her calmer mindset has helped her manage high-pressure matches.
- Pegula, seeded sixth, swept aside fellow American Amanda Anisimova 6-2, 7-6 (7/1). Pegula has yet to drop a set in Melbourne this year and is closing in on her first major crown at age 31.
The two have met six times previously, splitting the wins evenly at three apiece. Their semi-final clash promises to be one of the highlights of the tournament.
Other Semi-Final Match
In the women’s draw, two-time champion Aryna Sabalenka will face Ukrainian 12th seed Elina Svitolina in the other semi-final, setting up a thrilling final four lineup.
Looking Ahead
Djokovic’s semi-final opponent will be decided when Sinner and Shelton face off later in the day. With Djokovic eyeing history and the women’s draw featuring a mix of seasoned champions and rising contenders, Melbourne is set for a dramatic finish to the year’s first Grand Slam.
