A tragic accident on Monday morning claimed the lives of two people and left one person hospitalized after a collision involving two trucks on the Mombasa-Nairobi highway. The crash occurred around 4 a.m. at Mto Mawe and sparked a massive fire, causing traffic congestion that lasted more than five hours.

According to witnesses, one lorry was struck from behind by another truck traveling in the same direction toward Nairobi, resulting in explosions that engulfed both vehicles. Firefighters from Machakos and Nairobi counties were deployed to the scene to contain the blaze.

Anthony Mwangi, a long-distance driver who witnessed the crash, criticised the slow emergency response, noting that one of the containers could have been saved if the fire services had arrived earlier.

Machakos County police commander Monica Kimani confirmed the incident and said investigations are underway to establish the exact cause of the crash.

Motorists are advised to exercise caution on the highway as authorities continue to clear the scene and restore normal traffic flow.
