Lionel Messi scored twice as Inter Miami mounted a remarkable comeback from two goals down to defeat Orlando City 4-2 in the Florida derby.
The reigning MLS champions, who had lost their season opener to Los Angeles FC last month, appeared set for another defeat after Marco Pasalic and Martin Ojeda put Orlando City 2-0 up within the first 25 minutes.
Miami responded just after halftime when midfielder Mateo Silvetti fired a stunning 25-yard strike, giving the visitors renewed hope. From that moment, Messi took control of the match.
The 38-year-old Argentina superstar scored his first goal of the season in the 57th minute with a precise left-footed strike from the edge of the area to equalize. He later assisted midfielder Telasco Segovia five minutes from time, before sealing the victory with a low free-kick in the 90th minute, celebrating with a signature signing gesture toward the touchline.
“He’s the best player to ever play this sport. He’s a leader, and as a leader, he inspires others, but he also often needs to be inspired himself,” said Miami coach Javier Mascherano. “He has the ability to create chances like no one else, and that’s what allowed us to turn the game around.”
The win marked Messi’s 898th career goal for club and country, including 79 goals in 90 appearances for Inter Miami. Notably, it was Miami’s first victory in nine trips to Orlando.
The team now prepares for an away match against DC United on Saturday as they look to build momentum in the MLS season.
