The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) has seized illicit alcohol valued at approximately Ksh 5 million and arrested four suspects, including a local businessman reportedly serving as the chair of the Kabati business community.

The raid, conducted on Tuesday, targeted a bar and wines and spirits outlet located less than 100 metres from Kauwi Senior School, in clear violation of regulations prohibiting alcohol outlets within 300 metres of learning institutions.

During the operation, officers recovered over 900 cartons of assorted spirits and more than 250 crates of suspected counterfeit alcohol packaged in 500ml beer bottles. Preliminary checks indicate that many of the products bore fake Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) excise stamps, suggesting tax evasion and raising public health concerns.

NACADA Chief Executive Officer Anthony Omerikwa highlighted the risk posed by the outlet’s proximity to a school, noting national data on early exposure to drugs and substance abuse among minors. He emphasized that enforcement near learning institutions remains a critical priority.

The four suspects, including the alleged proprietor and three employees, were taken into custody and are expected to be arraigned in court. The seized alcohol has been secured for verification and further analysis, with authorities indicating that asset recovery proceedings may follow as investigations continue.

The operation was carried out with support from officers of the National Police Service.
