Presidents Cyril Ramaphosa and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva have jointly called for peace in the Middle East during high-level talks held Monday in Brasília.

The meeting took place against the backdrop of escalating violence linked to the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Israel against Iran, a war that has reportedly claimed more than 2,200 lives across the region.

Lula Emphasizes South America as a Zone of Peace

During the joint engagement, President Lula stressed the importance of maintaining South America as a peaceful region and highlighted the need to prioritize technological development over military confrontation.

“Here in South America, we position ourselves as a region of peace. Here, no one has nuclear bombs, no one has atomic bombs; here our drones are for agriculture, for science and technology, and not for war,” Lula said.

His remarks reflected a broader message advocating for the peaceful use of emerging technologies such as drones, which he suggested should serve scientific, agricultural, and economic purposes rather than military objectives.

Ramaphosa Condemns Civilian Casualties

President Ramaphosa echoed calls for de-escalation, expressing concern over the humanitarian impact of the conflict.

“Our visit to Brazil takes place against the backdrop of renewed conflict in the Middle East. We reiterate our call for the peaceful resolution of disputes in line with the United Nations Charter. And we condemn the loss of life, particularly the loss of civilian life,” Ramaphosa stated.

The South African leader underscored the importance of diplomatic solutions and adherence to international law in resolving global disputes.

Defense Cooperation Also Discussed

While advocating for peace, President Lula also acknowledged the importance of national security. He suggested that Brazil and South Africa could strengthen cooperation in the defense sector, ensuring both nations remain capable of protecting their sovereignty if necessary.

Such collaboration could potentially involve defense technology exchange, joint training initiatives, and broader strategic partnerships between the two nations.

Conflict Spreads Across the Region

The latest wave of violence in the Middle East intensified following airstrikes conducted by the United States and Israel on Iran on February 28. Since then, tensions have escalated across the region, affecting several countries including Lebanon, Qatar, and Kuwait.

The growing regional instability has prompted global leaders to renew calls for diplomacy and international cooperation aimed at preventing further escalation.

The meeting between Ramaphosa and Lula highlights the role emerging global powers can play in advocating for peaceful conflict resolution while strengthening strategic partnerships in an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape.
