Major Fire Destroys Vehicles at Kilimani Garage as Mechanics Count Losses

A major fire broke out at a garage along Ole Dume Road in Kilimani, Nairobi, destroying several vehicles and leaving mechanics and vehicle owners counting losses.

The blaze was reported early Tuesday, September 8, 2026, prompting a response from Nairobi County emergency teams and firefighters.

Nairobi County Chief Officer for Customer Engagement and Citizen Service Geoffrey Mosiria visited the scene as emergency crews worked to contain the fire.

More Than 200 Mechanics Affected

Speaking at the scene, Mosiria said the garage is home to more than 200 mechanics, with a significant amount of property destroyed in the blaze.

“Garaji ambayo iko na mafundi zaidi ya mia mbili, ambapo kumeshika moto leo usiku. Na mali ya watu imepotezwe ni mingi,” Mosiria said, describing the scale of the damage.

He said the county's emergency call centre received a distress call and immediately dispatched fire engines to the scene.

“We received a call in our emergency call centre, whereby we dispatched our fire engines,” Mosiria said.

Firefighters managed to contain the blaze, although crews remained at the scene to extinguish remaining flames and prevent the fire from spreading.

Several Vehicles Destroyed

According to Mosiria, both mechanics and vehicle owners suffered significant losses, with several customers' vehicles reportedly destroyed.

He said the value of the losses could run into millions of shillings, considering the number and value of vehicles affected.

“Millions of money have been lost in terms of the vehicles that have been destroyed in this area,” he said.

The fire has raised concerns among mechanics and vehicle owners whose vehicles were at the garage for repairs or other services.

Cause of Fire Yet to Be Established

The cause of the blaze had not been established by the time of Mosiria's statement.

He said specialists would be required to investigate the incident and determine what triggered the fire.

“Ni moto ambao chance yake haijulikani imetokana na nini,” he said.

The exact number of vehicles destroyed and the total value of property lost are also yet to be established.

Emergency Teams Contain Blaze

Mosiria thanked members of the public who raised the alarm and helped emergency responders react to the incident.

He said Nairobi County teams worked alongside mechanics at the garage to contain the fire and prevent further damage to vehicles and other property.

Firefighters remained at the scene as efforts continued to completely extinguish the blaze.

The incident is expected to trigger further assessment of the damage, while investigations will determine the cause of the fire and establish the full extent of the losses.
