NAIROBI, Kenya — Mercy Makini, the former wife of activist and politician Morara Kebaso, has publicly responded after he described himself as a polygamous man with two wives, identifying Mercy as the mother of his three children and Pauline as his second wife.
In a Facebook post on Tuesday, September 10, Makini rejected the suggestion that she remains part of Kebaso’s polygamous relationship, saying she left the marriage and has since moved on with her life.
“As for this talk about polygamy, please stop creating the impression that I am still part of your life. Polygamy is your business, not mine. I left. I moved on. I am living my life,” she said.
Makini also urged Kebaso to stop involving her in public discussions about his personal relationships, saying she had remained silent for years to keep private family matters away from the public.
Mercy Cites Domestic Violence
In her statement, Makini said she left the marriage because of what she described as domestic violence.
She alleged that Kebaso physically assaulted her, including during pregnancy, and said the experiences eventually led her to leave the relationship and rebuild her life.
“First, I walked away because of DOMESTIC VIOLENCE,” she said.
Makini said she chose to leave while she was still alive rather than remain in what she described as an abusive relationship.
“Society only appreciates a woman when they walk out of a marriage dead; I chose to walk out alive,” she said.
She said she left Kebaso’s home on March 2, 2026, and had not looked back since.
The allegations are Makini’s account of the circumstances surrounding the end of their relationship. Kebaso’s response to the latest allegations was not included in the statement provided.
Public Attention on Kebaso’s Relationships
The latest remarks come after renewed public attention to Kebaso’s personal life following his public references to having two wives.
Interest in the former couple’s relationship intensified after Kebaso was photographed spending time with Pauline, prompting speculation about the status of his marriage to Makini.
Makini subsequently revealed that she had already left the relationship months earlier.
Her latest statement now seeks to draw a distinction between her current life and Kebaso’s description of his relationships, while also explaining why she says she chose to leave the marriage.
Makini Says She Had Remained Silent
Makini said she had previously avoided discussing the circumstances of her separation publicly in an effort to protect the privacy of those involved.
However, she said Kebaso’s continued references to her in discussions about his relationships prompted her to break her silence.
Her comments have since drawn attention online, particularly because they address both the status of their relationship and her allegations about the circumstances surrounding their separation.
The developments have placed the former couple’s private relationship under renewed public scrutiny, with Makini maintaining that she has moved on from the marriage and does not consider herself part of Kebaso’s polygamous household.
