Wanga Dismisses Orengo’s Presidential Bid, Says Ambition Comes Too Late

HOMA BAY, Kenya — Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) chairperson Gladys Wanga has dismissed Siaya Governor James Orengo’s decision to seek the presidency, arguing that his declaration comes too late to mount a viable campaign ahead of Kenya’s next General Election.

Speaking on Sunday at Ndhiwa Catholic Church in Homa Bay County, Wanga said a successful presidential campaign requires years of planning, extensive preparation and the development of strong political networks — factors she argued cannot be built within a few months of an election.

The Homa Bay governor described the presidency as one of the country’s most competitive political positions, requiring sustained grassroots mobilisation and strategic political engagement.

Wanga cited the political career of the late ODM leader Raila Odinga, who unsuccessfully contested the presidency five times, to underscore the challenges involved in securing the country’s top office.

She argued that electoral outcomes are influenced not only by individual political ambitions but also by broader political circumstances and relationships with the administration in power.

Wanga Defends ODM’s Role in Luo Political Negotiations

Wanga also rejected claims by Orengo that the Luo community risks being left out of negotiations ahead of the next General Election because it lacks a presidential candidate.

She maintained that the community’s interests are being advanced through ODM, which she said has already embarked on discussions with the Kenya Kwanza administration over possible political arrangements ahead of the formation of the next government.

The remarks come amid heightened political activity as parties and leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Wanga further criticised the Linda Mwananchi faction, questioning its political direction and leadership structure.

She pointed to what she described as competing presidential ambitions within the group, noting that while Orengo has declared an interest in the presidency, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has also been linked to presidential ambitions.

Wanga Calls for Peace Ahead of 2027 Polls

The ODM chairperson also urged political leaders and their supporters to avoid violence and disorder during political gatherings.

She called for peaceful political engagement, unity and responsible leadership as the country approaches the next General Election.

With political alliances and potential presidential bids beginning to take shape, competition within and between opposition factions is expected to intensify in the months ahead of the 2027 polls.
