Youth Storm Utimo Matatu Sacco Offices Over Death of Colleague in Umoja

A group of youth and community members stormed the offices of Utimo Matatu Sacco in Buruburu, Nairobi, demanding accountability over the death of their colleague, Brian Wafula.

The protest followed the death of Wafula, who died two weeks ago near Space Mall in Umoja after he was allegedly pushed from a moving matatu following a dispute over payment.

According to his colleagues, Wafula had assisted the matatu crew in getting their vehicle out of deep mud but was allegedly not paid the amount he had been promised.

They claim that when Wafula later boarded the vehicle to demand his payment, a confrontation ensued, during which the conductor allegedly pushed him out of the moving matatu.

Wafula reportedly fell and suffered serious head injuries, which later proved fatal.

Police Deploy to Sacco Offices

The incident triggered protests at the Utimo Sacco offices in Buruburu, where demonstrators blocked entrances and called for those responsible to be held accountable.

Police were deployed to the area to contain the situation and prevent further confrontation.

The protesters demanded answers from the Sacco and urged authorities to expedite investigations into the circumstances surrounding Wafula's death.

Matatu Impounded as Investigations Continue

Buruburu OCPD said investigations into the incident are ongoing.

Police have reportedly traced and impounded the matatu believed to have been involved in the incident. The vehicle has since been subjected to forensic examination as detectives continue searching for members of the crew.

Authorities are expected to establish what happened inside and around the vehicle before, during and after the alleged confrontation.

Police have not yet announced any arrests in connection with the death.

Family Appeals for Support

Meanwhile, Wafula's body remains at the Mama Lucy Hospital mortuary as his family and colleagues work to raise funds for his burial.

The family is appealing for financial and logistical assistance to enable them to give Wafula a dignified send-off.

His death has also renewed calls from his colleagues and community members for greater accountability within the public transport sector, particularly in disputes involving passengers, crews and casual workers.

As investigations continue, authorities face pressure to establish the circumstances that led to Wafula's death and ensure that any person found responsible is held accountable through due process.
