Aston Villa’s Premier League title ambitions suffered a major setback as they were edged out 1-0 by Everton at Villa Park on Sunday, while Newcastle United’s quest for a top-four finish was stalled by a goalless draw at Wolves.
Villa, under Unai Emery, had the chance to close to within four points of leaders Arsenal but were punished by Thierno Barry’s second-half strike after a subdued performance. With Arsenal held to a 0-0 draw at Nottingham Forest on Saturday, the Gunners remain seven points clear of third-placed Villa, while second-placed Manchester City also trail by seven following their 2-0 loss at Manchester United.
Emery lamented the missed opportunity, saying, “We lost a very good opportunity. We did a very good season until now, but today we lost. We had our chances, we didn’t score and they had less chances, but they scored.” Villa’s frustration was compounded when captain John McGinn was forced off with a first-half injury.
Everton nearly stunned Villa in the opening seconds through Merlin Rohl, whose shot rattled the post. Former Villa star Jack Grealish, now with Everton, was jeered by the Villa faithful, and while he threatened with a goal-bound volley, it was Thierno Barry who ultimately secured victory after Pau Torres’s careless turnover in the 59th minute. Emiliano Martinez’s save and Youri Tielemans’s header hitting the bar could not prevent the home side from suffering their first home defeat in 12 games across all competitions.
Meanwhile, Newcastle were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw at a rain-soaked Molineux against bottom-of-the-table Wolves. Despite coming off wins over Burnley, Crystal Palace, and Leeds, Eddie Howe’s side managed only a single shot on target until the 85th minute. Howe reflected on the result: “We needed to do more in attack. I expected us to do better and create more. Football is such a strange game. We scored four against Leeds and looked free-scoring, but today we struggled.”
Nick Woltemade continues his goal drought, going seven games without scoring and managing just two goals in 13 appearances. With challenging matches against Aston Villa and Liverpool on the horizon, Newcastle must regain momentum to keep their Champions League hopes alive. Wolves, unbeaten in their last four league games, remain 14 points from safety.
Sunday’s results have tightened the title race for Arsenal while highlighting the growing challenges for teams chasing Europe, leaving Villa and Newcastle with crucial work to do in the coming weeks.
