Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has defended his decision to rotate the squad following Wednesday night’s 3-1 loss to Leeds United, insisting many of the changes were unavoidable due to player fitness and availability.
The defeat at Elland Road dealt a blow to Chelsea’s Premier League ambitions, leaving the Blues fourth on the table and nine points adrift of leaders Arsenal.
Speaking to the media on Friday, Maresca acknowledged the team’s poor performance but argued the circumstances left him with limited options.
“We did many things bad,” the Italian admitted. “Probably we also paid the bill for playing one hour with 10 players against Arsenal.”
Maresca made five changes for the Leeds fixture. Wesley Fofana missed out entirely, Moises Caicedo was suspended, while Malo Gusto, club captain Reece James, and winger Pedro Neto started on the bench.
According to Maresca, the rotations were driven by necessity rather than tactical experimentation.
“Most of the rotation we do is because the other one cannot play,” he said. “We have players in this moment not able to play every three days.”
He added: “When you pick 11 players and you win, it’s fine. When you pick 11 players and you don’t win, it becomes the reason why. For sure, playing with 10 players for one hour against Arsenal and then going to Leeds is not the best situation for us.”
Maresca also responded to questions about whether Chelsea’s youthful squad required more experienced figures to handle high-pressure moments.
“We always talk about experience when we drop points, but when we beat Barcelona and drew against Arsenal, nobody mentioned experience,” he said. “It was a bad game at Leeds for all of us.”
Chelsea will look to bounce back when they face Bournemouth on Saturday, as the club attempts to close the growing gap at the top of the Premier League table.
