The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested a 17-year-old boy following the desecration of Kenya’s national flag during a CAF Champions League match between Mogadishu City Club and Kenya Police FC at Nyayo Stadium on September 20, 2025.

Authorities confirmed that the minor, who was among two individuals filmed mishandling the flag, is now in custody as investigations continue. The second suspect remains at large, with the DCI urging members of the public to share any information that may assist in his apprehension.

In a statement issued on September 25 via X, the DCI cited Section 2B of the National Flag, Emblems and Names Act (Cap 99), which makes it an offence to show disrespect to the national flag, anthem, or other national symbols. Such acts are punishable by fines or imprisonment.

The incident sparked widespread public outrage, with officials describing it as both unlawful and “deeply offensive to the values we uphold as a nation.” The Kenyan flag, a symbol of unity, sovereignty, and sacrifice, is accorded the highest level of respect under national law.

The DCI stressed that the arrest should serve as a warning to anyone attempting to dishonour Kenya’s national emblems, reiterating its commitment to ensuring all offenders are brought to justice.
