Tense scenes unfolded on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, outside the Karen residence of the late ODM Party Leader Raila Odinga, as hundreds of mourners gathered to pay their respects following news of his sudden death.

In viral footage circulating online, a section of emotional supporters — mostly youth — were seen chanting “Ruto Must Go” while waving tree branches and crying uncontrollably. Others knelt or sat on the ground, repeatedly calling out “Baba! Baba!”, a name synonymous with Raila’s political legacy.

The atmosphere outside the Odinga home grew increasingly charged as mourners expressed shock and disbelief over the passing of the veteran opposition leader. Some were heard voicing suspicion surrounding the circumstances of his death, which has left the country — and much of the continent — in mourning.

Security officers were later deployed to calm the crowd as political leaders and dignitaries streamed into the compound to condole with Mama Ida Odinga and the Odinga family.

Speaking to journalists, ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna appealed for peace, urging Kenyans to mourn Raila with the respect and unity he championed throughout his life.

“Raila Odinga was a mentor and father to all. We urge Kenyans to mourn peacefully as we coordinate with the family and government to prepare for his final journey,” Sifuna said.

President Ruto’s Tribute
Earlier in the day, President William Ruto officially confirmed Raila’s death in a televised address from State House, Nairobi, alongside Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and Oburu Oginga, Raila’s elder brother.

“Fellow citizens, it is with deep sorrow that I inform the nation of the passing of Rt. Honourable Raila Amolo Odinga, our former Prime Minister and one of Africa’s greatest sons,” Ruto said.

He described Raila as a towering figure of democracy, whose legacy of courage, sacrifice, and reform would remain embedded in Kenya’s history.

“Kenya, Africa, and the world mourn the passing of a giant of democracy and a tireless warrior for good governance,” Ruto added.

The president declared seven days of national mourning, ordering that flags be flown at half-mast across the country and at all Kenyan embassies worldwide.

He called on Kenyans to reflect on Raila Odinga’s enduring contribution to democracy, justice, and national unity, describing the moment as a time for healing rather than division.
