Tusunini Village, Makueni County – A family is demanding justice following the death of Moses Maingi, 28, who allegedly succumbed to injuries inflicted while in police custody at Nunguni Police Station earlier this month.

Arrest and Detention

Maingi was arrested on January 8, 2026, after the owner of Oasis Bar reported him for disorderly conduct, claiming he had opened a door and released patrons who had not paid for their drinks. The bar owner allegedly demanded Ksh.20,000 in damages, which the family could not raise.

A friend later intervened with the Officer Commanding Station (OCS), securing Maingi’s release on condition that he would report back to the station.

Family’s Account

According to Maingi’s elder brother, Julius Mwau, he found his sibling lying unconscious when he went to pick him up from the police station.

“Twelve hours later, my brother had not spoken or eaten. We rushed him to Kilungu Sub-County Hospital for treatment,” Mwau said.

Maingi was referred to Machakos Level Five Hospital, but the family opted for Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH). Unable to secure admission at KNH, they turned to a private facility, where a head scan revealed a blood clot.

Though he was placed on medication and asked to return for follow-up, his condition worsened. On January 21, Maingi was rushed back to Kilungu Sub-County Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Calls for Accountability

The family has questioned what transpired during Maingi’s detention at Nunguni Police Station and why his mother, Ruth Mwau, was denied an occurrence book (OB) number. They are calling on government agencies to investigate and hold accountable those responsible for his alleged mistreatment.

Investigations Underway

Citizen Digital has established that the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has already launched investigations, with several individuals recording statements.

Kilungu Sub-County Police Commander Patrick Muthengi has dismissed allegations that officers assaulted Maingi, insisting that investigations and an autopsy will reveal the truth.

Maingi’s body is currently lying at the Kilungu Sub-County Hospital morgue, awaiting postmortem examination.

Conclusion

The death of Moses Maingi has reignited concerns over police accountability and custodial safety in Kenya. As IPOA investigates, the family of the deceased continues to demand justice, hoping the truth will emerge and those responsible will face the law.
