Authorities in eastern China confirmed that an explosion at a fireworks store in Jiangsu province’s Donghai County killed eight people and injured two others on Sunday afternoon.
Cause of the Explosion
Local officials reported that the blast was triggered by the “improper discharge” of fireworks by villagers around 2:30 pm. The resulting fire was extinguished by 4:00 pm, but not before causing significant casualties. Emergency management, fire, public security, and health teams were dispatched immediately to carry out rescue and response operations.
Safety Concerns During Lunar New Year
The tragedy comes just days before the Lunar New Year, a period when fireworks use peaks across rural communities in China. Sparklers and “missile” fireworks are commonly used to mark celebrations, but authorities have repeatedly warned against unsafe practices such as test-firing or smoking near fireworks shops.
China’s Ministry of Emergency Management issued a nationwide notice requiring fireworks enterprises to conduct full safety inspections to prevent similar incidents.
Broader Pattern of Industrial Accidents
Industrial accidents remain a recurring challenge in China due to lax safety standards. Earlier this month, an explosion at a biotech factory in Shanxi province killed eight people, while a steel factory blast in Inner Mongolia in late January claimed at least nine lives.
Accountability Measures
Authorities in Donghai confirmed that those responsible for the fireworks store explosion have been taken into custody, and investigations are ongoing.
